We want to provide a little background about how we are creating original Live Wallpapers made of plasticine for Android.
Why from plasticine?
For our team at Kolesov & Mikhaylov, wallpapers are a hobby that team members can pursue in their spare time.
When we thought about ideas for new live wallpapers, we thought about the possibility of creating something new and original for this marketplace. So we came up with the idea of creating live wallpaper made of plasticine. The highlight of these wallpapers is that each element is created to look alive. It is clear that professional artists created the elements. In addition, plasticine allows for obtaining sufficiently high quality content for wallpapers with a visual technical design.
At the moment, our team has already listed 10 plasticine live wallpapers for sale (including such wallpapers as “Plasticine spring Flowers“, “Plasticine Farm“, “Plasticine town“, and “KM Beach Live wallpaper HD“, which have all already become favorites of users). Plasticine widgets, which are a logical next step after wallpapers, have also quickly appeared. We are thinking of releasing a plasticine icon pack in the future.
So, you might ask, how do we do it?
It is very interesting to create plasticine live wallpapers, but it is also very time consuming. First we had the idea to have artists sketch the wallpapers!
Later, we shaped each character element separately depending on how the object is animated. For example, the body of a crab, legs, and pincers. Sometimes a sketch of the crab on a piece of paper precedes this animation process.
In order to get the best results, we use the best plasticine. Sometimes this means that we have to travel all over the city.
Once all the necessary elements are made, it is necessary to do a “photo shoot” of each character. It is important to use a good camera, tripod, good lighting, and background. The setup is also important. We place the characters on a white board and use a professional camera to take the photos.
Then we edit all the images in a photo editor. We place the digitized images together in such a way as to create the finished scene.
In order to animate the wallpapers, we program using our own simple engine for OpenGL ES 2.0. This is the engine that is embedded inside the live wallpapers. We place the objects across the digitized scene of the live wallpaper. If necessary, we impose the animation and reactions to finger presses, or include the time of day or a parallax effect, etc. And so the plasticine world begins to move. So in a small cove on a sandy beach surrounded by palm trees, the birds fly, dolphins frolic, and funny crabs scurry along the beach.
We have implemented support for ETC1 texture compression in the latest version of the engine embedded in the “KM Beach Live Wallpaper HD” live wallpapers.
The background sky or water in the live wallpapers is also made of plasticine, so the textures turn out to be quite big. In order to save space, we use a grayscale digitized sky texture in some of the live wallpapers. Then we can use shaders to get the right color for the sky.
And… voila! This is how we create such neat wallpapers.
